Tidbit - Lighting Ideas

This is a brilliant preparedness idea.....With power outages, off and on, in different areas all year round, this is a great idea....Our thanks to the anonymous contributor!

“Due to an unexpected ice storm we lost power for about 5 hours. We were scrambling around in the dark, looking for matches, candles, flashlights, etc. When we looked outside we noticed our solar lights, shining brightly, all around our walk ways.We went outside and brought several of the solar lights inside.

We stuck the solar lights’ ground-mounting prongs into plastic drink bottles and found they made the nicest, brightest, safest indoor lighting you could ever imagine. We put one in the bathroom, the kitchen, the living room and the bedroom. They provided plenty of light for us to function (somewhat) normally.

We used small 20 oz plastic bottles but found they also fit into most of the larger (liter) bottles. If you find you need a weight in the bottle to keep them from tipping over, you can use a few of the attractive colorful "flat marbles" that they put into aquariums and vases. You can also use sand, gravel or whatever may be available, to give the bottle a solid base.

We found they were perfect inside the house, providing light all through the night.

The next day, we took them back outside and they instantly started recharging. They were soon ready for use again - anytime we might need them.

We found these lights to be a perfect addition to our emergency preparedness kit – one more time, something we already owned. There are all types of solar lights available and sold by a wide variety of retail outlets, so locating lights that will work for you should not be a problem.”
